The netballers continued their winning form with once again, four out of four wins. Whilst the footballers showed determination and improvement despite being undermanned.
Thank you to all of those that either purchased or sold a ticket to our Reverse Raffle. It was a very successful day for the club, with over 100 people attending the function. Thank you to those that assisted in organising and helping out. Big thanks to Jamie Ardern for being the mastermind of the day. The comedian was very funny, the bbq was tastey and the company was even better.
This week the C-Res girls took on Dingley in a tough physical battle in their campaign to remain top of the table. We welcomed Mila and Alex to the side for their first game for the Yarras, and both girls were absolute assets to the side, with Alex being named best on for her incredible efforts in the defensive end. Roz was also a welcome addition back into the side this week, working well with Hannah Bevis to put on an absolute clinic in the goal circle. The Dingoes were physical, and fought for every ball which forced the Yarra’s to apply defensive pressure all the way down the court and over every ball. This allowed for an amazing amount of turnovers coming out of the defensive end, which the attackers capitalized on. Knowing it was going to be a fight to the finish, the Yarras kept up the energy and pressure for all 4 quarters seeing them walk away with the win 33 – 19 keeping them at the top of the table.
C grade entered this week losing our fearless captain Mad to the sunny skies of Newcastle. Determined to get a win on the board, we welcomed Laura again to our team as well as Yarras new comer Racquel. The girls battled with dingley for the first half, with our star shooters Emily and Jess scoring shots despite the fierce winds to end up neck and neck at half time. The defenders worked hard all game, picking off loose passes and missed shots to send it back down the court to the attacking half. With rotating combinations, the girls made use of each set of fresh legs and slowly extended the lead. Jess was exceptional in GA, not only sinking shots from left, right and centre but also causing numerous turnovers down the court, earning her this week's best on court. The Yarras are coming in hot for the remainder of the season, once again proving their style of play is a force to be reckoned with by running out the game with a 43-25 win
B Grade entered the court this week oozing with positivity and high spirits, determined to clock a win against opponents, Caulfield Blue. A rough start saw the Yarras down at first quarter time, however the positive attitude displayed by all members of the team enabled the girls to step up and take control in the 2nd quarter, turning the game around. Amazing versatility was displayed by Kate Shevlin who absolutely dominated the goal circle, earning her best on court for the day. Special mention goes to Hannah Lyon who played like an absolute champion! The vibe down the court was one of encouragement, support and teamwork. This attitude, coupled with sheer determination and hardwork, saw the Yarras come out on top. SY 29 def Caulfield Blue 28.In this weeks match, A Grade lined up against Dingley Red. Expecting a tough match, the Yarras went in firing from the first whistle. After a close first quarter, Yarras were able to capitalise on the turnovers to head into the main break with a 7 goal lead. With the game becoming increasingly physical, the girls were able to hold on to the lead and come away with a 5 goal win. Best on was awarded to Meg who not only dominated in GA but also in WA as the key link between both ends of the court. South Yarra 49 def Dingley Red 45
This week the Yarra's travelled to Chelsea Heights with a new found confidence from our massive win the week prior. The girls got off to a slow start allowing Chelsea Heights to kick some early goals and take out the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Yarra's find their voices and after some dominance in the centre clearances the game shifted our way. Chelsea Heights was kept goalless for the next 2 quarters before they fort back in the last quarter. The Yarra's held onto their lead winning the game 7.7-49 to 6.7-43. Massive efforts from the whole lineup but special mention to Lucy and Beni for some kicking 2 goals each and Racquel for kicking her first of the season.
The thirds trekked out to Doveton once again for an early start against a side that had put up some very impressive results in recent weeks. What began as a clear morning quickly turned sour, as the players were buffeted by cold winds and rain. The football matched the weather early, with a scrappy first quarter yielding just a single goal for both sides. The second quarter, was a tight struggle and inaccuracy in front of goals keeping both sides goalless for the quarter, and leaving a margin of just two points at the half. The scoring struggles seen in the first half continued into the third quarter, with a single James Evans goal being the only major seen in the quarter. Despite this, the fatigue caused to both sides by the struggle of the first three quarters saw the game open up in the last, and unfortunately the Yarras saw themselves on the end of a three goal to one final term, leading to a ten point win to Doveton. Despite the result, there were many positives to be taken out of the performance, and many important lessons learned as the side looks to consolidate its spot in the top two over the next few weeks.
The Reserves again struggled for numbers but turned up with a determined 22 on the day. The wind threatened to create havoc but this was ignored by the Yarra midfield early on. Early chances were taken work two early goals scored. Despite a competitive hitout and several chances to add to their goal tally they were the only goals scored for the day. Ending with several injured players and some moving up to the seniors made the final score a bigger margin than it looked like. Yarra went down 90 to 16 to Ashwood
Whilst it wasn't quite winning form, the Seniors looked to continue some good recent play against Ashwood. A couple of undisciplined acts let Ashwood ahead and proved to be the difference in the end. We went down by just two goals but our second half was inspiring with some great football played by the boys. The back six were great, Adsy found plenty of space and footy out wide, as did Dimma. Scotty was tough inside and Albus slotted in seamlessly kicking a long range goal. Cory's couple (on one leg!) kept hopes alive but unfortunately it wasn't enough. On to Hallam next week!
