Sat 12 May- At last a win on the board. I say that in disbelief that after 2 rounds and 6 games of football through the grades the Montmorency Football Club has only one win. Let it be the catalyst for things to come for the season.
Unfortanately the 19's lost in a game where the margin was unfair. Northcote did get a six goal jump, but by half way into the last quarter there was only 3 goals in it and it was anybody's game. In perhaps the longest quarter that these players have ever played in, 35 minutes, the time keeper must have fallen asleep!, Northcote kicked six goals in the last ten minutes to run away 10 goal winners. Best on ground clearly for Monty was Woodhouse, though Moulas wasnt far behind.
The Reserve team was also beaten comfortably by Northcote. Hoffy has his work cut out to get the motivation happening, though he needs the players to train and be part of the club to make this happen. Craig Webster was outstanding, even prompting the Northcote coaches to ask me who he was, how long he had been at the club and when was he going to be playing in the seniors, and thats no joke! Though I will ask Webby, how many games have you payed at northcote in the past? and they dont know you? Well done "old" man!
The Senior game started as an onslaught. Nine goals one point in the first quarter that was trully impressive. Even more so when you consider that both "guns" Keenan and Cuthbertson were out injured. In came Sabastian Ciavola and Wayne Pavitt, both great goal sneaks in thier own rights but it was Matt Cusack and Derryn Stanley in the first quarter that seemed to mark everything that came into their reach, each of them kicking 3 goals in the quarter. Brett Hayes was comfortable in the ruck against Brett Jefferies, and with Hayes's extra running ability he was able to be more effective around the ground even chipping in for a goal himself.
Around the ground Ambrose Swindon imposed himself. He seemed to be everywhere as the number 10 marked and outplayed his opponents. Combine that with Ben Finnan who dominated his position at Centre Half Back, there was two players who were "down" last week that bounced back in glorious form to restore the belief of the Monty faithful. Add Andrew Pepyat who was having one of his best games into the mix, and suddenly Northcote didnt get a look at goals. Northcote clearly targeted the Monty Captain making him earn every posession, but this only seemed to fuel in the fire in Pep and he gave out as good as he got, if not even better as at least two wounded cougars left the field after being bumped by Pep.
Overall it was a good win that should be the spark for the rest of the season. Teams like Northcote have never laid down, especially on their own turf, and any win at Westgarth Street is a good win. Northcote will be a team in the mix for finals this year, so we better learn from today for the game or games later in the season.
