Sat 19 May- Diamond Creek ventured to the Magpie nest today in the hope of capatalising on last years shock win at Diamond Creek to beat the Monty Machine on their turf. Fortunately for the Magpie faithful this didnt happen and Monty came away with the points.
Unfortunately the day didnt start off well with the U/19's losing. They showed at times they have the talent, what they need to do now is put four quarters together and get that win on the board. Keep your heads up guys as that first win is closer every week.
A sudden gust of wind before the Reserves game, and I'm not talking about Hoffy addressing the players, blew accross the ground knocking the siren off its perch. This fall destroyed the internal wiring meaning no horn and the game was delayed a couple of minutes while we found the old cow bell to start the game. Luckily it wasnt terminal damage and Graham Woodhouse was able to ressurect the siren. Thankfully for Hoffy this didnt effect his game as the reserves won their first game for the year. After Hoffy was made fun of on Thursday night for not winning a game as yet, he came back with vengance today keeping his record of never losing three games in a row in tact. Well done to all the players, now Hoffy wont shut up as he is well and trully back in town.
The senior game was played in all conditions. There was sunshine, there were clouds, there were gusts of strong wind, there was rain and there was even a rainbow. At the end of the game the pot of gold sat sqaurely with Monty as Diamond Creek folded in the last quarter.
The game started in sunshine with a strong wind favouring DC. DC was able to strike early and at one stage went out to a 20 point lead with the aid of a strong wind. The Magpie game finally started to function late in the quarter and by quarter time there was only 2 points in it. The weather must have had a strong effect on not only the players, as even the umpires seemed to struggle. The new rules seem to be causing confusion as one umpire gave a Yellow and a 25m penalty, the other umpire in another incident gave only the yellow with no 25M penalty and in another incident Gutto was well and trully collected illeaglly in front of the umpire who gave a free kick for the incident, yet Gutto got the yellow from the umpire for mouthing off at the ump for "mouthing off" while the hitter got off scott free. And I thought the new look NFL was all about stamping out illegal hits. If the umps dont know the rules and take control when neccessary then how can the crowd and players know what is going on?
The second quarter was a scrappy affair with neither team really claiming the ascendency, so much so that the scores were level at half time. Neither team had a definite winner as players drifted in and out of the game as both coaches made their moves and matchups while the weather conditions made for close checking football as the ball spent a lot of time on the ground.
After half time Monty started to gain control. Amobrose was marking everything, McGough seemed to be playing every position and kicking it to himself, while the long kicks of Sage and Gutterson were killing the DC game plan. With Andy Owen and Andrew Pepyat controlling the backline DC just couldnt get a chance to put scoreboard pressure on Mont going into the last quarter.
The last quarter was one of those quarters where you wished there was a mercy rule. The lights had to be switched on at the start of the quarter due to bad light, but soon the sun came out and DC seemed to melt. The ball seemed to be permanently in the Monty forward 50, and even though Mont could really only keep scoring points, DC never even looked like going forward of centre. A five goal to nil last quarter told the story as the Monty boys won every position. A 43 point victory was perhaps modest, but if at the start of the game you had told me we would win by seven goals I would have taken it.
The DC team is young and will keep improving, and if they put 4 quarters together then they will be a hard team to beat. To the supporters of DC, thankyou for a great day, the spirit in which you mingled and bantered with the Monty crowd was fantastic and showed how local footy should be. I hope we can play at your ground later in the year with the same great spirit.
