Sat July 7- A disasterous day for the Montmorency Football Club as the chance to consolidate a position in the four was lost in terrible weather conditions to West Peston who just seemed to want to ball more than our players.
The day started in sunshine and it was looking like a wonderful day for football. The U/19's were playing after a weeks rest due to the enforced bye from the Heidelberg game and there was an expectation they would do well. Unfortunately they were never in the hunt as West had an 8 goal first quarter. By half time Mont had only scored 1 goal to 12. it is hard to be positive in those circumstances, yet the boys responded and lifted the work rate in the second half, even though they were never going to win. Great efforts by Tim Moulas, Joel Eley, Matt Searle and Kyle Vann.
The reserve team needed the win today to stay in touch with the top four. Unfortunately Hoffy was left to ring around and try to get anyone to play such was the lean pickings he had for this weeks team. With so many injuries the club is struggling for depth this year, and this week it showed as West kicked seven goals before Mont troubled the scorer. After the first quarter onslaught, West only won the rest of the game by 2 goals, so if anything can be taken from the game, the realisation that even undermanned we can stick with anyone, we just need to do it for all four quarters.
The senior game started and finished in the rain. For almost the whole game there was steady rain, at times it was so heavy it was hard to tell which team had the ball. The umpiring was to say the least confusing, in that it seemed unless you wore a West jumper you were not entitled to a free kick. However that said, the discipline shown by our boys out on the field was disgusting. You are taught from under 9's that you do not argue with an umpire as he wont chnage his mind. For some reason, our players believe they are above the basic rules, and just keep yapping and keep giving away territory to the opposition. In conditions such as were played in, giving away successive 25's that results in a goal is unforgivable. I know it can be hard when you know the umpires are almost verging on being branded cheats, but both teams play by the same umpire on the day, so for goodness sake, grow up and SHUT UP!
Quarter time saw level scores, and into the second quarter Mont managed to take an early two goal lead, then all of a sudden it stopped and West took control of the game. It was hard to put the finger on the moment that changed everything, but it seemed the petrol tanks were empty and the white flag was flying before half time.
I cant actually say much about the second half, due a wayward Spooner kick, I found myself with such a headache that I couldnt concentrate on the filming of the game. The ball smacked me clean in the head, in the process chipping a tooth and leaving me with the wobbles on the roof. Add to that the insult of being beaten by West and the day was as stated earlier, trully a disaster.
Congratulations to the three players that made their senior debut, sorry it was in a losing side. From the 19's, Matt Reinke, and from the reserves, Daniel Renehan & Addison Parker.
The fate of the finals campaign is still well and trully in our own hands. We do not need teams to lose, we just need to beat those that we meet from this point on. No excuses, just win.
