XAVIA Elford made an impression on teammates and coaches at the Australian Junior Football Championships in Adelaide last week.
The MacKillop College year nine student was named in Vic Country's best players twice, first when the side beat the Northern Territory in a convincing display and again when it proved too strong for South Australia in a dour struggle.
The Vic Country side won all of its preliminary games before losing to Vic Metro in the grand final by just a goal — having beaten their city counterparts earlier in the week.
Selection in the Vic Country team was a natural progression for Elford who has represented the Central Murray Football Netball League the last two seasons.
Elford said the carnival was a good experience.
"It was the elite level, so it was much faster and you had to adapt," he said.
The 15-year-old plays for Tooleybuc Manangatang and prefers playing on a wing.
He said he enjoyed "finding space and moving the ball quickly to the forwards" when in the midfield.
"I'm more an attacking sort of player," he said.
Elford said it had been worthwhile.
"We all bonded pretty well over the week."
