A Boot Full of Blood
Avoca picked up several top players when Amphitheatre disbanded in 1959. Amongst them was Jack Jacobs, who had established a reputation as a forward.
What Jack lacked in height, he made up for with a fierce determination and his uncanny ability to ride high on opponents backs for the big mark.
On the 14th May 1960 he kicked nine goals against Langi Kal Kal, and was also Avoca`s leading goal kicker for the season.
In his prime, and on his day, Jack was a very exciting footballer and as tough as nails.
Playing in an inter league match, he received a nasty gash to his knee in the first half.
The team was down at half time and needed a lift.
Unlike today`s footballers, Jack was not one for bandages and, despite his injury, he went to centre half forward and proceeded to turn the match by kicking 12 goals.
Jack`s version of the story is a bit longer, but the message is still the same. To use his own words, `And I bagged those 12 goals from centre half forward with a boot full of blood`.
