In 1958, Ron realized his football ambition when he helped Dunolly win a premiership. Ron has played football for over 23 years, mostly for Dunolly, but a premiership win with that team had eluded him. There is no doubt that he helped Dunolly to win the District League 1958 premiership. In the last two games, the grand final and replay; he kicked seven goals in each. He was a tower of strength all day and when his team mates forced the ball forward, he made position and kicked accurately.
Ron has played over 400 games of competitive football and in his 24 years of football, he only played with three clubs Dunolly, South Bendigo and Bealiba, but he also played for three years with service teams while he was in the army. Prior to the 1958 premiership, he had one won premiership with Bealiba in the Loddon Valley League.
In his long football career Ron won the District’s League best and fairest award twice and the top honour in the Loddon Valley League. He has always played the game hard, but we could safely stake our reputation that not one player would have a grudge against Ron as a footballer.
A thorough gentleman both on and off the field, Ron has been an inspiration to all young players and has been the instigator behind the club’s successful functioning. We would say that as regard football that Ron has been more precious than gold to Dunolly.
To Ron on Saturday went the honour of leading the team onto Princes Park and it was particularly noticeable that immediately the siren heralded Dunolly’s win, spectators made a bee line for Ron to carry him shoulder high off the ground. To the left Ron and Ron Jr lead out the Dunolly side.
Both of Ron’s sons played for Dunolly Ron Jr and Wayne.
