The game was full of interest and kept the big crowd on its toes from start to finish. Dunolly gained its break early in the game and its great accuracy in front of goal enabled it to maintain its grip. The weather was cloudy, the ground in perfect condition and there was a slight breeze to the scoreboard end.
Lacey won the toss and kicked to the scoreboard end. Gibbs roved well, kicked down field where Living received a free and goaled. A free to Taylor in front scored full points for Dunolly. With Lacey dominating the centre, Dunolly went forward again where Polinelli goaled from a free. Jukes on the half back flank was a fine defender for the Roses. M. Watts scouting around the forward line picked up the ball and goaled. Good handball by Dunolly enabled Deledio to score a goal.
Kirk went into the forward pocket, D. Bilson to the centre in an effort to curb Lacey but still the Dunolly Captain held control. Living in the ruck, Gibbs on the ball paved the way for many Primrose moves but Coleman and Howard held good control in defence. Moore to Living was good play but they were held out again.
Surprisingly Lacey went to half forward, M. Watts into the centre and K. Hunt onto the ball. D. Bilson started to take control in the centre kicked Primrose forward where Kirk goaled. Interference to M. Watts after he had kicked let Deledio in for his second. With plenty of vigour being used by both sides, C. Turton received a free and goaled from 20 yards out. Living playing well both on the ball and up forward, marked and goaled.
Misunderstanding by Primrose let Deledio goal and then a goal to Lanfranchi and one off the ground by Deledio gave Dunolly a 21 point lead. C. Turton missed an easy mark but Gibbs scouting well around the pack kicked a nice goal. With D. Bilson playing well, skipper Lacey moved back in the centre and Watts went on the ball. Polinelli who received a nasty knock early was playing a grand game for Dunolly and he scored his second goal.
With Lacey taking back the honours in the centre he goaled well for the Navy Blue and Golds. At this stage play began to get heated and from a nasty incident the Roses got a goal.
2nd Quarter Dunolly opened the quarter with a good goal from Hunt. Davenport playing well on the half forward flank, goaled for Primrose. With Moschetti and Hunt playing well For Dunolly they got the ball to Taylor goaled. At this stage, Umpire Wallis was letting many bad incidents go unpenalised. Interference to Hunt after he kicked enabled Taylor to goal. Hunt was in every Dunolly move passed to Deledio who goaled.
With Lacey burning in the centre and Watts, Hunt and Moschetti playing well, Dunolly had the call. M. Watts now on the ball repeatedly sent the ball forward. Goals to M. Watts and Polinelli gave Dunolly a 35 point lead. Kirk moved into the centre and D. Bilson moved to full back. C. Turton kicked off the ground for full points. K. Hunt to M. Watts who kicked a major.
3rd Quarter M. Watts who was rather quiet in the first half was in everything. Jukes was a sound defender for Primrose. Watts and Lacey were unbeatable at this stage and paved the way for hunt to score. With primrose down 40 points they came back through C. Turton who passed a beauty to Kirk but he foolishly played on and was caught. However Gibbs playing a mighty game raced in and goaled. Gibbs to Patten to living was good football bur Hickey saved. Then Poole on the wing passed to Moore who goaled. Bell and Poole both kicked long goals and Primrose was just 14 points behind.
With time running out for Primrose, Polinelli kicked off the ground and Dunolly looked set for another flag.
