The match provided sweet revenge for Dunolly which went down to Carisbrook by 32 points in the second semi and the main factors which brought victory were the team's all round strength, aggression and the will to win spirit. Right from the start Dunolly went for the ball regardless and it paid handsome dividends.
1st Quarter Lacey gave Dunolly a flying start as he broke loose to goal soon after the bounce. Dunolly was frittering away chances with ill directed kicking and foolish short passing. A goal to the elusive Hunt gave Dunolly a narrow lead. Graham Watts, Howard and Mortlock were snags in defence.
2nd Quarter McKinley was a sound defender as Dunolly attacked persistently. With Lacey, Lanfranchi and P. Mortlock winning in the roving department, and Geoff watts and Hunt lively forwards, Dunolly started to gain the upper hand. Strong play by J. Deason let Hunt into goal as Dunolly surged forward. Dunolly lost a grand player in Graham Watts (leg injury) but seemed to cover the gap well.
3rd Quarter Dunolly brushed Brook aside early in the third and goals to K & G. Watts inspired the team. Beasy put J. Deason in possession for a goal. Brook looked rattled as the crowd urged Dunolly on. Injected with the “will to win spirit” Dunolly swamped its opponents and goals to Hunt, Lanfranchi and G. Watts raced the team to a commanding lead at the last change.
4th Quarter Dunolly quickly went further ahead as Grant, Shay and K. Watts combined well and G. Watts topped the effort with full points. Brook scored a few goals in the dying stages to make the score more respectable.
Best players Dunolly had many good players but none better than the evergreen LACEY. Beaten early; he fought back to become the most dominant force in the game. J. DEASON impressed with 100 minutes of sound purposeful football. HOWARD did not put a foot wrong at full back, his marking at times was brilliant. In attack GEOFF WATTS and HUNT were a constant danger. Watts could have a got a bag of goals had his kicking been better. He is very fast and tenacious. LANFRANCHI, the MORTLOCK brothers, WERRY and AKERS also did well in aside which had 18 effective players.
Dunolly Football Club is a credit to the league
High praise rained on the players and officials of the Dunolly Football Club at the premiership dinner. District League Secretary Mr. G. O’Callaghan said that over the years Dunolly had built up an excellent reputation as a club either on or off the field. He said that he always found Dunolly an enthusiastic and well administered club, one which could always be taken as an example by any country club. He said the team was not only a credit to Dunolly but also to the league.
Magpie President Mr. F. Bartlett said that Dunolly only had to carry on in the same lines as it had in recent years to prosper. He thanked the club for its cooperation with the Magpies throughout the season. Mr. Bartlett said Dunolly had supplied the Magpies with a fine player in Ron Britten. The success of players such as Ron reflect great credit on the Dunolly club and shows what a wonderful grounding the club is providing for young players.
Coach Arthur Lacey said the premiership win was achieved by team effort. “We had no stars but 20 battlers.” He explained that credit for the premiership must go further than the 20 players selected in the grand final. He said the players who stuck with the club during the season had all played their parts. “At Dunolly we fight for one thing, a premiership and to strive to retain the good sporting name and spirit of the club.” A shield displaying the names of the premiership team was presented to the club by Mr. Harry Rogers of Maryborough.
Three members of the club were honoured for outstanding service rendered over the years- coach Arthur Lacey, President Jim Jenkins and the treasurer Doug Skene. The trio was the first persons to have their names inscribed on the new honour board donated by Mr. Ern Watts.
As usual big tributes were paid to the work of the Ladies committee in providing the dinner and lending untiring support throughout the year. President of the Ladies Mrs. J. Shay presented a cheque of 100 pounds to the club.
Trophies Arthur Lacey won the club's best and fairest for the 4th time.
Stuart McDowell (captain) won the best and fairest for the Reserves.
