Carisbrook ended Dunolly’s run of District League Premierships when it scored a convincing 20 point win. After a fairly even first quarter Brook got on top through the outstanding play of Alan Shearer and from that stage they were never seriously challenged for the flag.
Dunolly battled hard but had no counter to Brook’s pace and system, combined with their control across the centre and half forward lines and in all key positions except at full forward. The win gives Brook its fifth premiership. Shearer’s performance in the first half when he gained 19 kicks was outstanding. Dunolly did little to curb Shearer until late in the second quarter.
1st Quarter: Carisbrook was quick to get into stride and soon had a goal through Ellis who found shearer. Barry Shearer was providing a ton of drive for Brook as both defences held firm. Kevin O’Shea saved when he pounced on a Lacey long kick.
But Dunolly wasn’t going top be denied when Noel Beasy shot the ball to Lacey for a goal. Soon after Lanfranchi put Dunolly in front with a 60 yard goal which floated over the pack. Brook continued to have the better of the play through the play of the Shearer Brothers, Alan, Errol and Barry but the battling Dunolly defence kept Brook in check. Lanfranchi and Davidson started some promising moves late in the first quarter but were held up by Symons, Hooper and co.
2nd Quarter: After Palmer goaled quickly, Brook were inspired by the brilliant play of Alan Shearer at half forward who took the game away from Dunolly. Dunolly was even being overshadowed in the ruck by young Kaye. Raselli had a chance but missed an easy shot.
With Errol Shearer beating Terry Watts in the centre, Brook had most of the play but the stout defence of Walsh, Bowman and Maurice Watts kept Dunolly in the game. Bowman had star goal kicker Quinlan almost completely blanketed and this had a big influence on the game.
After persistent effort Bryant weaved clear of the pack and goaled for Brook. In a belated move Dunolly swung Polinelli onto Alan Shearer but it made little difference. Quinlan switched to the pocket, immediately he flashed into prominence with a goal and then Ellis hit the post and Palmer missed an easy shot. Brook was letting Dunolly off the hook.
3rd Quarter: Dunolly made several changes. Maurice Watts moved to CHF, Walsh to Full back, Bowman to CHB and Kevin watts got Shearer. Maurice Watts lifted the attack somewhat but he didn’t receive much support. Dunolly did better this quarter but Brook playing confidently always looked the better side.
Davidson and Maurice Watts gave Raselli a chance but only a point resulted and then Maurice ran into an open goal and missed. Lanfranchi a tireless worker for Dunolly paved the way for several chances but Long, McKinley, G. Cain and Kevin O’Shea repulsed the attacks. Lanfranchi and M. Watts combined and passed the ball to Lacey who goaled.
4th Quarter: In the last quarter Lacey was moved into the centre and with Lanfranchi, Walsh and M. Watts prominent, Dunolly really took the game up to Brook. However, they only kicked 1 goal through Walsh and they were frittering away many chances.
When Hurford and R. Raselli got the ball to Noel Beasy for a goal, Dunolly were only 16 points down. In the concluding stages Brook held on.
