After one of the largest crowds in decades witnessed Dunolly put on a great display of football to defeat arch rival Carisbrook by forty points on Saturday, another great throng descended on the Town Hall for the Golden Era Reunion.
The evening was organised by the club in order to pay tribute to all those who were involved both on field and off in what remains Dunolly Football Clubs’ most successful period during the 50’s and 60’s when the club played in eight grand finals for an impressive haul of six premierships.
Around 110 people attended the event, 60 of them past players from that era. The Hall looked resplendent, decked out in Dunolly colours and with extensive memorabilia on display. People came from far and wide for the event, Terry Watts coming from Western Australia and Charlie Townsing flying in from Northern NSW being just two examples. The night was highlighted by great food and people catching up with each other to reminisce about a great period in many peoples lives.
A particular highlight was listening to Ron Deledio and Joe Lacey speak so brilliantly about what the football club meant to them and to Dunolly itself. It was a great privilege to hear these club legends speak so well and many current players were in awe at some of their memories which they related to the crowd as they spoke.
Craig Burn also held a Q and A session with current recruit Shannon Motlop about his extensive playing career which was also highly entertaining. This was a very enjoyable night and many people mentioned what a great success the night was.
Of course this event could not have been such a hit without the hard work of many people including Daniel and Stan McNamee who put in so many hours organising the event. Rob Edwards , Barry Taylor and Mavis Park were also instrumental in helping track down past players along with Joe Lacey and they all put in a huge effort to get the night up and running.
A massive thank you must go to Vicky Tierney and Michelle McCloud for the catering and to all the other netballers who gave their time to work in the kitchen, on the floor and also behind the bar. Thank you!
A special mention to Stan for putting together the Golden Era Reunion book which is a fantastic piece of historical relevance to the Football Club and the Town as well. Stan was well assisted by Max Watts in tracking down photographs and details. To all who helped set up the hall including Chooka, Mavis and Vicky and then those who helped clean it as well , a big slice of gratitude to you all!
The Club was so impressed with the evening that they are strongly considering holding a club reunion annually so if you missed out this year come and get involved again at the Dunolly Football Netball Club and help make next years reunion even better.
