We will start this week’s write up by acknowledging the passing of our oldest life member, Mr Rod Cameron. This article does not have sufficient space to do justice to the man that Rod Cameron was and what he gave to the LFC, other sporting groups the RSL and more. Rod was a captain, premiership winning under 18 and senior coach and so much extra. A more detailed account can be found on the LFNC Facebook site. Due to print deadlines Rod’s passing could not be included in the last record, but the footballers and netballers wore black armbands in respect and appreciation.
Our congratulations go out to Eleanor Patterson, her family and her coach David Green. Eleanor definitely vindicated her decision to give away netball with the junior Parrots to concentrate on the high jump. The Green and Gold uniform colours looked great on you Eleanor. Well done, and good luck with your return to your studies and then even bigger, better and higher performances to come.
Our game prior to the bye was at Drouin where the Hawks senior players displayed plenty of spirit and restricted our scoring. It was also great to see Drouin field a reserves team again, who also were not just there to make up numbers, but had a real go and were a credit to themselves. Drouin’s strength at present is in its netball and its junior footballers, where we struggled to match it in most grades.
Netball: C Grade were our only winners on the day with a massive win. A grade knew they only had to win this game to sneak into the top 5 and make finals a real probability. Unfortunately we came up against a strong Drouin side and we had a week where a few girls all had an off game on the same week. Fortunately Sale did the right thing and defeated Bairnsdale, which means our finals hopes aren’t gone just yet. On our day we are definitely good enough, and the challenge is on today, as we play the top placed side in what is now a do or die game.
Football: Similar to the previous week against Warragul, Drouin took honours in the morning games and Leongatha dominated the afternoon games. The ground was in fairly good condition all things considered and as a result quite a few goals were scored throughout the day, until the last quarter of the seniors where strangely after a 6 goal third quarter to Leongatha, neither side scored in the last term. Nick Nagel kicked another four goals for the game in the seniors and is sitting equal third on the league goal kicking tally. It was great to see Nathan Johnston back on the footy ground in the reserves after a very, very long absence. Fortunately for him, his goal kicking improved as the game went on. Awards: Seniors: Bairs Hotel – Lochie Dumont. Darcy’s – Zac Vernon, Spokes Meat and Fish – Tom Marriott. C. Verboon, J. Mackie, S. Westaway & B Van Rooy. Quite a few names here that came through our juniors. In fact 15 of our side had came through our juniors, with 4 coming from Alberton clubs and one from Mid Gippsland, leaving only Rooster who is married to a Leongatha girl and has lived in Leongatha for many years. Reserves: McCartins – Oakley Kerr. Darcy’s – Matt Davies (6 goals). Evans Fuel – Sam Embrey. Brock Davidson, Grant Fleming & Ryan Higgins. U18s. Corals Fish n Chips – Kyle Cooper. Bakers Delight – Fraser Kelly. McDonalds – Michael Olden & Anthony Argento. Jack Ginnane & Blake Moscript. U16s: President’s Award – T. Evans. Hair Bairs – N. Trotto. CSC Snackbar – T. Sauvarin. McDonalds – K. Cooper & B. Jones. S. Hanrahan.
Auction Players Footy was the same as the previous week, Seniors – Tom Marriott. Reserves – Brock Davidson. Netball A grade- Kathy Reid. B Grade – Andrea Lynch. C Grade – Ashlee Van Rooy.
This week we travel to Morwell for our last away game, followed by two home games. Morwell are travelling fairly well in the senior grades of footy and we will need to be at our best, but we are expecting to take it up to the Tigers. The U18s know that this is their best chance for a win and the under 16s also will be keen on getting the four points. As mentioned earlier, it is a must win game for the A grade, but we got within a couple of goals the first time we played Morwell and will be going in confident of causing an upset. B and C grade will be tough gigs and all the junior grades will be aiming for wins in competitive contests.
Social Club. The Comedy night is on tonight at the Grandstand function rooms. It is not too late to come along and enjoy a great social evening. The players review is on after the Moe game on 16th August. When these have been run in the past they have been very entertaining, but the night will only be as good as we make it. Don’t let your talents, or lack thereof embarrass you, as everyone will be in the same boat. So get your act entered now.
Victory Through Harmony.
