A brisk but sunny day at Tantanoola saw three of our footy sides and two of our netball sides play in the 2nd semi final. Although some results were not to our liking, all tried very hard and those who lost, will prepare and work hard to win this week. Good luck today to our Junior Colts, B Grade footy, B Grade netball and A Grade netball. Go hard! Congratulations to the A Grade football for winning through to the GF in a close and tough match. Hopefully the extra week will allow all to recover from their injuries. A reminder: Presentation night for Junior football is on the 17th September and the Senior Presentation night is on the 24th of September for both senior netball and football. Mark Mudford plays his 50th this week along with Steven Lewis who plays his 200th. Hope you both make this day memorable.
Sideline news: an ex-coach forgetting to water the players and becomes enthralled in the game! Maybe he’s not cut out to be a water boy!!! Also, an assistant coach forgets to check phone during A Grade and doesn’t know any of the AFL scores- first time this has occurred all year!!! The brawl in the B Grade in the break was interesting as was the yellow card to the Mt Burr water boy. Remember; get your colours out for the Preliminary and GF! Be proud to wear the red and blue! Go the Demons!!
Junior Colts: Unfortunately it wasn’t our day. The endeavour and attack on the footy was great in the first half but seriously lacked in the second half. By halftime we were still well and truly in the game only be down by a goal and having a lot of the play. After the halftime break we stopped our run and attack on the ball which let their bigger boys run riot. The best thing out of the game is that for a half we kept right there with the top side. As players and coaches we would have learnt what we need to improve on to come away with a flag at the end of the year.
Tom Sullivan was excellent all day and was named best. Tim Sullivan battled hard against 2-3 opponents giving us a big contest at CHF. Jared Mansell was excellent down back and put his head over the footy a number of times. Jordan Stark was another battler, as was Riley Chant.
All is certainly not lost boys and we’ve worked hard all year to get a double chance and now we have to take it against Robe this week and prove to everyone that we deserve to be playing in a grand final. Good luck boys.
B Grade: Great footy conditions but a really disappointing day. Mount Burr really showed us what level we need to play at to win finals footy. Their run and accurate ball use is what we need emulate this week men and then we can have another crack at them. Robe will be a very tough opponent so let’s play at our best and get over the line.
Best players against the Burr were Paul Millard who was a tower of strength, Adam Lewis and Kane Blacksell, with Sully and Justin McCrostie being the other strong contributors. Good luck today for Steve’s 200th. Let’s get him a win!!!
A Grade: Congratulations to host club Tantanoola whose oval was fantastically presented after a very wet build up. The first quarter saw us kick into a slight breeze. As expected, the game was hard and fast and very evenly contested. We ended the quarter just in front which was a good start.
In the second quarter, going with the wind, we really worked hard. Down to 17 half way through, everyone dug deep to not allow Mount Burr to gain ascendency and to the boys credit, we outscored them. First half of the third quarter was good but then for the last 10 minutes, we had a real lapse in concentration and Mount Burr pounced. When the Burr kicked the first goal of the last quarter, to go one point in front, we were under the pump. To the boy’s credit, everyone lifted from this point on and with some quality goals finishing off our hard work, we were able to force home the required result.
Adam Taylor was great in his 100th game. Ryan Fox, Paul Bosko and Tobei were excellent in defence while Will, Benny O’Dine and Matty Martin were tireless in the middle.
Into a Grand Final is Fantastic but we have the hardest hurdle still to conquer boys, so make sure our feet are very firmly on the ground.
All the best to the Junior Colts and the B Grade today as well as our netballers. Go the Demons
