A great day for the Bay boys down at Kongorong, winning four from four- a very rare occurance. In sunny conditions we came away with the Bruce Lightbody shield (literally) and Steven Noble was awarded the medal for Best on ground. Thank you to the Bellum Hotel for the donation of the winning keg and I urge all supporters to visit the Bellum soon for a beer or a meal. Looking forward to a great day today against Kalangadoo and remember, tonight is Back to School night (ask Brooke or Izak!!!) so support our wonderful social committee.
Junior Colts: Travelled down to Kongorong to come up against a very strong side. To the boys credit they came away with a win. Tim, Sam, Kyall controlled much of the game all day. They were backed up well by the rest of the team. Best players were Tim Sullivan, Sam Zeitz, Kyall McClean, Tom Feast and Ben Milstead. Looking forward to the next match against Kalangadoo.
Senior Colts: A number of supporters commented to me during and after the game of what a great spectacle the senior colts match was, despite being one sided. The players displayed what team work means and their work rate enabled precise and quick movement of the footy. With three players out with A grade duties, in a 16 a side match, pressure was put on other players to take more responsibility, and it was gratifying to see some really shine in their new roles. Ben Wilke was exceptional with hard running breaking the lines and using the ball effectively to team mates or finishing with goals. Tom Latchford in the ruck and up forward caused many headaches for the opposition as did Darcy Kemp. Joel Feast tore the game apart on his wing as did new comer Malcolm Lewis who could have ended up with a swag of goals but was very unselfish and creative bringing team mates into the game. Ben Rolph impressed with his cleanness at ground level and provided some great shepherds and Riley Chant always presented strongly at centre half forward against strong opposition. As I mentioned to the players post match thank you for the positive attitudes with so many interchanges and players performing well still finding themselves on the bench owing to our surplus numbers. A special mention to Justin Finnigan who stepped aside to allow the late inclusion of Jordan Zeitz back from injury who also performed well. I could mention many more who contributed on the day as it was a total team effort with 12 different goal kickers and a high standard of teamanship on display. Well done all.
B Grade: Well done boys, the first win for the season. The big ruckman lead the way all day with the Best on Ground. With so many multiple scorers, it isn’t hard to see we need some goal kicking practice. It is good to see the boys move the ball well down the ground. Best players for the day were Josh McNamara, Will Trench, Michael Edwards, Scott Lucas, Matthew Byrne, Izak Ransom and Kane Blacksell.
A Grade: With a late change for Ryno who doesn’t seem to know what end you are supposed to hang on to hedge trimmers( not the end with blades). The A grade had a real battle with Kongorong who were always going to be tough and took a long time to shake. It was great to retain the Bruce Lightbody shield. Dexy Noble was inspirational all day showing why he is newly appointed captain, our backline was as solid as ever lead from Zack and Tobbei who ran all day and created plenty. The Odine brothers played four tough solid quarters. Dawry and Brodes also gave Kongorongs’ backmen a hard time. Burls played a great game in the ruck and is providing great support for Sharma. Again big congratulations to Bozzy who played as reliably as ever; a very hard man to get a kick on.
JAMES MCGREGOR 150 GAMES (PORT MACDONNELL)
Port MacDonnell’s new playing coach is celebrating his 150th game today at home against Kalangadoo.
James started his football career in the Junior Colts and progressed through the ranks winning the Malseed medal in 1998, as the fairest and most brilliant player in our league Under 17’s.
James then applied his trade in the Western Border Football League playing for West Gambier where he further developed his skills and football knowledge.
He returned to Port MacDonnell in 2003 and has been a vital cog in the seniors ever since. His elevation last year to assistant coach saw James really blossom into the leadership role, and he was a natural selection to take on the top job in the club after Glen Fry retired. His pre-season planning and conditioning of the players has been outstanding and has allowed us to get off to a great start to the year with two wins so far.
Everyone at the Port MacDonnell Football Club and his very close knit family, congratulate James on his 150th and wish him not only a great day today but a great year in his role as our playing coach. All our best Macca!
