Four from four, a great day out for the Bay! Firstly, on behalf of the Port MacDonnell Football Club, we would like to pass on our condolences to the family of Michael Swaffer. Michael started junior football at the Bay in 1965- 1968 that culminated in a Colts Premiership in 67-68. He went on to playing in the seconds in 1969/70, wearing guernsey number 35. After his stint as a player, Michael continued to be a major contributor to our club, filling boundary umpire duties and getting his whole family involved with helping out around the club. We sincerely pass on our best wishes to the family.
Junior Colts: This week was always going to be a hard fought out game coming up against a very determined and attacking Hatherleigh side, they beat us to the ball and out played us in the first quarter. I think our boys were still in holiday mode. Sam Zeitz who was great all day got the boys up and running and showed them how by giving 110% you can turn a game around. Tom Feast moved to the ruck and done a great job, winning most of the hit outs. Tim Sullivan went to centre half forward, taking great marks and kicking 5 goals. Baulchy was again a key player through the centre along with Lockie, Ned and Wade with their attack and run with the ball. The back line was strong stopping almost everything coming their way. Great hands Liam Kemp. Best Players - Sam Zeitz, Tim Sullivan, Lockie Tilley, Scott Baulch, Tom Feast and Ned Wilke all played well. This week boys let’s try and get to the footy first and get in and help each other out.
Senior Colts: Well a few weeks out of footy can certainly take away some momentum. Full credit to Hatherleigh though as up until three quarter time they definitely took the honours being on top in centre clearances, and at quarter time should have been at least two goals up. Despite the win I was disappointed in how we played the game. The high behind tally reflected our style of play. We did not centre the ball when we should have, we did not utilise our team mate who ran to the corridor to be able to receive the ball in front of goal, instead we kicked around corners or blazed at goal instead of dropping the eyes. Our last quarter was pleasing and we certainly got back on track playing a skilled and team orientated style of play. Our switches of play, an defensive gives lifted and we started moving the ball quickly seeing us kick four goals as opposed to only two in each of the first three quarters. Having a number of player changes each week does not excuse individual accountability to the team when taking the field; too often too few did the hard work. Joel Feast and Riley Chant can certainly be excused whose work rates to run to position to receive the ball or to defend, second efforts, shepherds, tackling, and voice were clearly evident. Well done also to Lachie Byrne also showed great competitiveness as a defender and later up forward winning all his one on one contests. With so many numbers pressing for selection and ground time, make sure you seize your opportunity and do the team things. The work you do off the ball will be scrutinised as I believe we have a lot of room for improvement in this area which will result in a much higher standard of team football than what was evident today.
B Grade: A great start to the game today saw the boys kick 7.2 to 1.2 in the first quarter, which was probably our best quarter of team footy for the year. Unfortunately in the second, the good B grade side left the field to be replaced by the bad B grade side which was more keen on playing individual football. This co-incided with the Hatherleigh boys lifting significantly, allowing them to win the quarter, and almost costing the coach his voice on his better half’s birthday (happy birthday Lauren). The rest of the game was a tight tussle, with the final margin being only 4 points different to the first quarter margin. Better players were Eddo running all day in his first game back for a few weeks, big Josh in the ruck, and Muzzy with a couple of goals in his first game for the club. Can't afford a fade out like that against Glencoe next week, let’s all get out on the track at training during the week. GO DEMONS!
A Grade: Our a grade team got off to a slow start in the first quarter but got stronger as the game went on and played some really good hard running football. Our football is getting better each week considering the amount of changes that takes place each Thursday day night, full credit to the guys coming up from reserves and senior colts they all played some terrific football. Clear best on ground was Benny McGregor played extremely well all over the ground and has made a huge impact since returning from overseas. Matt Byrne was outstanding racking up plenty of disposals and winning contested footy. Johnny McBain is a pleasure to watch and is becoming a vital part of the A grade team damaging to opposition where ever he is positioned. Again Big Will gave midfielders first use and racked up plenty of quality touches. Shauny B, Tobbei and the Fox brothers also made life difficult for Hatherleigh’s forwards. Glencoe next week. Let’s make sure we continue our winning streak Go Demons!!
