The 19’s went down by 28 points with Dan Smart and Ozzie Anderson among our best and remain in fourth place on the ladder. New Reserves coach Andrew Venables felt the pain of his first loss when we were well beaten; Sam Pentney and Dylan Jones were named our best.
We thank the strong contingent of Surrey Members and Supporters that turned out at Forest Hill to witness a see-sawing First XVIII game with both sides separated by a goal or less at each change.
With big Josh Hughes taking some nice grabs, the run of Ryan Kennedy and Kane Henden and the height of the Briscombe Brothers, we were having a real crack. Despite a serious first quarter shoulder injury to Mark Matheson and a clash of heads between Liam Doidge and Terri Miriklis (that saw more bandages applied than at a Mummy convention) we managed to lead at three quarter time 6.8 to 6.6 to set up a crackerjack last quarter.
The final quarter saw Surrey add another 3.4 to Forest Hill 4.2, which included a controversial decision to award a goal when to all (bar a few people wearing white) saw Full Back Darcy Sketcher punch the ball through for a touched behind.
The siren sounded which ultimately decided the game and recorded a loss to Surrey by just two points. Justin Cuzzupi continued his great season kicking three goals while Hughesy also chipped in with three.
This leaves the seniors 5-5 and out of the four on percentage, so makes this week’s clash back at home against Coldstream a must-win match. The reserves also have a chance to climb the ladder if they can take the points, while the 19’s have a bye.
Get down to Surrey Park tomorrow to cheer the boys on if you can.
Great to see many families head down to club sponsor Chadstone Kia & Mitsubishi, last weekend and take advantage of their big sale. Look out for the Currie Family driving around in a brand new Kia Sorento over the next week or two!
