The Under 19’s had the week off and set them for a top-of-the-table clash with Ferntree Gully.
So it was the Reserves to run out to ‘kick off the dew’ at the tiny Koonung Reserve. Our boys fought well all day against a team that are knocking on the door of the top four, eventually running just short of their opponents falling 7.5.47 to 9.8.62. Most heartening for Surrey was the fact that they played the game right out and was able to outscore Nunawading in the last quarter.
Best Players for Surrey Park were big man Harry Cook, Matt McBride, Luke Paolini, Heath Riky, Matt. Prudden and Jason. Hagland. The Goal Kickers were Jason Hagland and Todd Campigli each with 2, and singles to Heath Riky, Blake Mios &Matt Prudden
With a couple of handy inclusions this week into the Senior Team with Ben Myers and Joshua Hughes crossing from Liliydale FC during the week, and a nail-biting loss last week versus Eastern Lions expectations this week were high amongst the playing group and the large contingent of supporters that made their way to the game.
Right from the outset it was a tight tussle, with new player Josh Hughes scoring our first goal for the day they boys were clearly up and about. At the end of a tense first quarter, Surrey led at the first change 3.3 to 3.0.
In the second quarter, Nunawading continued their accuracy in front of goal moving to 7.0 before they scored their first behind. Ex-AFL Player Jon Hay was proving a handful at full forward for the Surrey defenders with youngsters Bede Briscombe and Darcy Sketcher both having stints on the big man. Surrey kept hard at it and managed to score three goals to Nunas five to go in at half time eight points behind the home team.
Coach Davidson swung the big change at half time throwing Ben Myers into the middle at the start of the third quarter with immediate impact, sending the ball forward on multiple occasions. With Ashley Simpson working well with Josh Hughes, we were able to provide multiple targets on the forward line. Andrew Rogers chipped in for a goal and Dan Toma was a live wire around the forward line. Down back Bede Briscombe, Ben Vile and Hayden Ruggeri were all solid and kept cool heads when under pressure. Surrey were able to restrict Nunawading to just a single goal during the quarter whilst scoring three themselves to go in at three quarter time two points up.
There was a real sense that the boys had the upper hand and wanted desperately to take the four points and break the duck for the season.
The quarter started strongly with Surrey scoring the first two goals. Graeme Johns was everywhere and young players Richard Scott, Riley Tempany and Tom Ross were most impressive.
In a tense five minutes, where neither side could score a goal, Nunawading were able to fight back with the next two goals with just one point separating the sides with 10 minutes to play. Our boys went again and managed another two goals and then were able to withstand multiple thrusts by Nunawading in the last five minutes to score a memorable win. Mick Paolini was awesome in defense, as was Ruggeri, Sketcher, Vile and Briscombe.
Final score saw Surrey Park defeat Nunawading 13.10.88 to 11.8.74.
Ashley Simpson worked hard all day and was rewarded with 4 goals, Josh Hughes, Dan Toma & Ben Myers each scored 2 with singles to Riley Tempany, Andrew. Rogers and Graeme Johns
Best Players for Surrey Park were Ben Myers, Riley Tempany, and Graeme. Johns, Luke Francis, Hayden Ruggeri and Ashley Simpson.
Well done boys, we’re looking forward to next week’s clash at home versus Coldstream where we welcome back some players returning to the club from interstate
