Senior Club Update
Last weekend saw the 19’s head out to Donvale to take on a very strong opponent. Donvale, kicking with a nice wind at their backs, got the jump early to lead 6.2 to 0.1 at quarter time. Our boys settled in the second but still trailed 7.2 to 1.6 at the main break. Donvale, again kicking with the breeze were held scoreless in the third while Surrey managed 1.1 to close the gap to 25 points at the final change, which was a mighty effort. Then the floodgates opened, the determination from our boys shone through and we managed 6.5 to 0.0 to run out 16 point winners. To hold Donvale scoreless after half time was a mighty effort and the win all but cementing a top-two finish. For Surrey, Harry Lacchiana and James Box both kicked two and James Box was named our best.
The Reserves, took on Nunawading who had a breakthrough victory a week or two ago, and looked fired up to get another one last week. Our boys didn’t have it all their way, with a low scoring first quarter giving us a 24 point lead at quarter time. Things started to fire up after that with Surrey kicking on to record a 109 point victory. Luke Jackson kicked six, Nick Coad five and Dean Spencer playing in the ruck was named our best. This consolidates third position on the ladder which is great news for the club.
The senior team also got off to a slow start, with Nunawading using the small ground to their advantage. A 20 point lead at quarter time became a 64 point buffer at the main break. Nunawading scored for the first time in the third so at the last break we led 15.20 to 0.1. The final quarter saw Nunawading score five goals, to our 5.6, giving us our sixth win for the year. Justin Cuzzupi kicked six and Graeme Johns four, and Dan Smart was named our best.
This week the all three teams are back at Surrey with the 19’s in another test against Division Three top side Park Orchards, while the seniors and reserves take on Silvan. The seniors welcome back playing assistant Cam McCasker, Ozzy Anderson while Lindsay Gilbee lines up again for Surrey this week. The reserves side looks a cracker, with several senior players returning from injury or absence, so good luck to Dec Hauser, Liam Doidge, Chris Allen and Dan Toma this week.
Tomorrow we also host the Surrey Hills Football Club 30 year premiership anniversary and reunion, also with the parents and families of current day players.
