Country Victorian Representative - Mitch Pendergast

How do you top off a year that includes a Big V Youth League Mens championship and the Junior Coach of the Year? If you're Mitchell Pendergast, you represent Basketball Victoria Country at the Southern Cross Challenge. "For the second year I was fortunate enough to be involved with the Vic Country as an assistant coach with the under 14 Gold miner boys at the Southern Cross Challenge," Pendergast said. "It was a great opportunity to work with some fantastic coaches from throughout Country Victoria and coach against some of the best junior players and coaches the country."

A product of the CBBA, Mitch grew up representing the South Geelong Kings and Corio Bay Stingrays. In 2010/11, Mitch made the step into coaching at representative level. A keen thinker and lover of the game, Mitch has taken in all the advice he has received to become a promising coach in his own right.

Tournaments like Southern Cross are great tests for a coach, as with little preparation time you need to impact your players very quickly. "It was great to be away for the five days talking with other coaches, constantly working on how we can improve as much as possible on the fly with little training time," Pendergast said. "The kids had some tough games against some strong teams from Western Australia and Vic Metro, showing a lot of maturity and courage against much bigger bodies."

Mitch has put in hours of work both at club level and at Basketball Victoria Country events and the CBBA are sure it won't be long before Mitch has a Country Victorian team of his own.
