The Pigs & Co Bayside Bombers have started season 2013 off with a win against a valiant Wynnum Vikings at Wynnum on Sunday in round 1 of the AFLQ Masters.
With the Bombers fielding 4 debutants in their side and with Luke Crowe, Darren Smith and Troy Buckley on the sidelines the Bayside boys started the game like a small child at the Ekka, full of enthusiasm and excited with every touch of the footy that they could muster. With big Scotty Huston in his first game lining up at full forward the Bombers had a focal point to work with, or thats what the coaches idea was. With Big Russ Bagnall dominant in the centre bounces, the Bomber onballers were second to the ball as their opposites won clearance after clearance, but with the defence line of Jason March and Simon Groves repelling the Wynnum attack, the Bombers decision making when attacking had the coaching staff wondering if their instructions were being ignored. With the quarter time bell ringing the Bombers held a handy but frustrating lead of just 14 point.
The break gave coach Luke Crowe the opportunity to reset the game plan and start a fresh, but within the first 20 seconds of the second stanza, the inaction of the Bombers to nail Crowes game plan had him scratching his head and others wondering if some should undergo hearing tests. With the quarter only 5 minute sin, Ada Roberts limped off with a dodgy Achilles and showered for no further part in the game, causing Crowe another headache. The quarter was frustrating to watch until Kim Dry, George Del Torso and Houston all kicked goals and with Brett Knight making his first appearance in 2013 from a good paddock snapping a goal the Bombers stretched their lead to 30 points at the long break.
As the crowd gathered in the balcony at the Viking den, so did the home sides gusto as they blew the Bombers off the park in the all important third quarter. The Vikings had their tails up and peppered the goals with consistent ball carrying, chip and handball play on at all costs game to outscore the Bombers for the quarter. The Bayside boys were tiring in the oppressive heat of autumn and hands on hips and finger pointing was as much as they could muster, all but for the efforts of defenders Steve Hazall and Paul Magher the margin was still a lead to the Bombers , but only just.
With all players looking in the Viking Den direction as they made their way to starting positions for the last quarter, the Viking again jumped the start to keep the goal umpire busy at their end snapping the first goal for the last stanza, but their inability to kick straight could have cost them the four points as the Bombers with ex South Adelaide onballer Michael Rennie starring in the last quarter with 4 clearances and 3 hard ball gets, sending a message to the coaching staff of his preferred position. Forward come defender come forward Jason March controlling centre half forward with 4 marks and the finishing of Kim Dry and Del Torso saw the Bombers play their get out of jail card to come up victors by 33 points.
