The Active Care Physiotherapy Bayside Bombers made it two from two on Saturday night with a 102 point win at Casheez Park Victoria Point.
The Bombers won the toss and kicked to the clubhouse end where after just 30 seconds the Bombers had the scoreboard attendants busy. With a rejuvenated George Del Toro front and centre and with Scott Houston thrown into the ruck due to the near career ending knee injury to Russ Bagnall, the Bombers with Teale Weller and Adrian Roberts dominating the centre breaks feeding the footy to evergreen BC Rander (2 goals) and Del Toro (3 goals). Coolangatta with a few centre break wins due to consistent pest Jaeger (Bayside’s POG) but all of Coolys forward thrusts were repelled by inform Jason Marsh and Simon Graves, Bombers up by 26 points.
The second quarter saw the Bombers again control the centre breaks with Houston working well all over the ground linking up with Dis Coteque, whose speed and centimetre perfect disposal to Del Toro and Kym Dry (2 goals) was a delight to watch under the spinning ball. Coolangatta fought on and posted their first goal, but it was only a token as the Bomber juggernaut was hitting top gear heading into half time with a commanding 8 goal lead.
The half time break only made the Bayside Oldies keener to continue their dominance over their arch rivals in front of a home crowd and with position changes bought on by coach Luke Crowe, the Bombers avenue of attack was centred on Jason March, who may have gotten his capabilities and ambitions mixed up, and BC Rander found the ball hard to handle under a light dew. Teale Weller made the most of his switch to the forward line sent 3 majors home for a good return on his night out and with a couple of sneaky goals from Clive Taylor, and a welcome back to Grant Taylor who was impressive in his first outing for 5 years. Bombers extend the lead to 72 points at the orange break.
With the aroma of BBQ hamburgers wafting over the ground the last stanza began as a onslaught on goal with Best on Ground Scotty Houston slotting a 50m goal effectively sending Cooly back down the Gold Coast Highway with their tails between their legs, something the Bombers looked forward to doing after the last few seasons of leaving Kirra battered and bruised. The Bombers again controlled the centre breaks in what was looking like training drill by the end of the game.
“Its a great feeling to beat these Cooly blokes on our home turf” First year coach Russell Crowe said after the game, “We stuck to our game plan which was pleasing after the Wynnum match. Bring on Aspley”
