The Rathbone Engineering Bayside Bombers overcame an emotional week to bound over the top of the Robina Roos in their round 4 clash at Burleigh Heads on Sunday afternoon finishing 102 point winners.
With an onshore swell and the balcony at the Burleigh Sports Club looking a better option, the Bombers took to the field with just one interchange but with team spirit strong and a mixed opposition the Bombers jumped out off the blocks like a startled cat bagging 8 first quarter goals stunning the home side who managed just one goal one, Bombers up by 44 points.
The second quarter began with the home side starting to control the centre bounces and get first use of the ball putting the heat on the Bomber defence, but when the Roos ran out of petrol half way through the quarter, the Bomber onslaught on the goal square began. Jason March (3 goals) and Big Russ Bagnall (2 goals) were splitting the goal posts and with George del Toro (5 goals) who was wow weeing the crowd selling his hand candy. Rodney Neilson, Adrian Roberts (3 goals) and Clive Taylor (2 goals) were raking up plenty of stats feeding Mark Hudgson (2 goals), who would rather be surfing. Bombers up by 72 at the long break.
The half time break saw Russell Crowe turn the coaches board upside down playing the second half with Alfs reverse grid. Chris Dodd (1 goal) and Aka Cuerel (2 goals) made their way to the forward half for what would the first and last time as the fox terriers ran amok like the they hadn't been out for a week. With a constant feed of the footy into the forward line the defenders come forwards seemed a tad overwhelmed with the occasion apart from new key forward Paul Dunstall (3 goals) who was also involved in 4 goals assists. The Robina boys were sweating on the final siren going as the margin hit 120 points, but the Bombers defence started playing like the forwards that they are, not manning up, loose play and not sticking to the game plan which saw the Roos kick 5 last quarter goals to finish 102 points behind the travelling Baysiders.
“A great win today considering the week that we have left behind us, a great show of team strength today” Football manager Darren Smith said after the game.
