The Stressless Therapies Bayside Bombers came thundering back to mother earth on Saturday night with a 50 point loss to a powerfull Palm Beach at Casheez Park.
The Bombers went into Saturday nights game without Big Scotty Houston and with Russ Bagnall on one leg, this would leave the rucking duties to the Penquin, Simon Graves, who against the big man power of Palm beach would have his work cut out for him. The first quarter would be the beginning of the end for the Bombers as the Lions put on 6 unanswered goals thanks to Palm Beach winning the centre clearance and the sharpshooting of their All Australian full forward who would finish the night with 8 goals.
The Bombers fought back in the second quarter thanks to a magic 10 minute spell from George del Toro, who in a short period of time would change the game with four 2nd quarter goals. The home side was full of running and with Del Toro and Magher in good touch and the rebound from Teale Weller and clearance work of Ada Roberts, a comeback was on the cards. Bombers down by 31 at the long break.
The half time break could only work for the Bombers as a restructure to give the home side a chance was be planned. Boots Taylor to full back to curb the power forward and Grant Taylor onto the ball to work some magic and a two pronged forward line of March and Rander were the moves, but Palm Beach were switched on after the break and postered another 6 goal quarter to put the result to bed. Two goals towards the end of the quarter was the only shineing light for Bayside.down by 54 point at the orange break.
The last quarter saw the BBQ haze cover the ground like a rolling fog, the smell of burgers and snags sizzling away and the voices of the crowd expecting a monumental last quarter from the Bombers could be heard. Goal to the Bombers, could a miracle happen at Victoria Point tonight was the cry, another goal to del Toro taking his tally to five for the night, the juggernaut was rolling. Roberts again in the thick of things and with Bagnall back in the ruck, the bombers were looking good. Two quick goals to the Lions soon halted the Bombers momentum and with the call from the BBQ that the snags were ready, a goal on the siren to the evergreen Mark Worell, put the Bombers pain to bed as the Lion ran out comfortable winners.
Coach Russel Crowe was philosophical after the game,”Our first quarters have been a issue this year and tonight was another bad one, we cant do this to good sides, they embarrassed us tonight”
