October 2012 saw 8 Bayside Bombers join the Queensland Team to take on the other states in the AFL Masters National Carnival. It was held between the 7th to 13th of October in Townsville at the Tony Ireland Stadium and Murray Sports Complex. The Carnival saw around 800 players play over 5 days in various age groups.
Coach Doug played for the over 60’s in an exhibition match which he broke all the cardinal rules he’s been yelling at us over the season. Carlo, Flash and Caspa played in the over 50’s (Flash played in a few other teams). Bags pulled the boots on for the over 45’s and Torso Ada and Dukes ran on for the over 40’s.
Each age group played 3 games each (more if you where up to it) with an aim to win the carnival. Unfortunately no Queensland teams won their grand final.
The Bombers players did their club proud with Flash playing for NSW over 45’s, winning their final against Vic Metro in a highly controversial age group, which saw the Qld team missing out in very irregular circumstances……..
Presentation night saw more accolades come the Bombers way with Bags (TBU) and Torso (TLU) (game whore) awarded All Australian honours. On a serious note after Torso’s 1st Div2 game he had to be admitted for a bad case of leather poisoning with no fewer that 78 touches of the ball, and 22 ‘don’t argues’ and not to mention seeing clouds of green mist! (both Bags and Torso suffered massive head swelling after the presentation night and started drinking Gay drinks (it’s a possibility that this swelling could continue for the next 12 months))
If you get a chance team mates, put playing in an AFL Masters National Carnival on your bucket list before your body packs it in. It not just about playing the greatest game on earth, it also about mateship, meeting fellow players, and well you’re just going to have to find out for your self what else happens.
Next year it is in Darwin and there is 8 Bombers so far heading to it…..again!
