MEMBERS of the Bayside Bombers Masters AFL team who played in Queensland sides did their club proud at the recent annual Australian Masters AFL Carnival in Townsville.
Bombers Gavin Kearney (over 40s) and Russ Bagnall (over 45s) were awarded the honour of being chosen in their respective age group's All Australian team.
Both players had fantastic carnivals, polling high votes in all games.
Competition in each division, played in the heat, was fast, tough, furious and the Queensland boys came out with a number of wins.
Bombers' Darren Smith showed plenty of guts, battling on with a bruised thumb and bad knee only to find after scans that his thumb was broken and he had snapped his cruciate ligament.
Mick Kath played tough footy even through a knee injury and Carlo Achille and Adrian Roberts both suffered calf and ankle injuries which frustrated their performance in the last couple of games.
Mike Rennie stood up in his games for Queensland and was a standout in each game.
As a special one off on the night of opening ceremonies, all were treated to a game played with great enthusiasm but maybe not so much athleticism, between a Queensland over 60s team and a team made up from other states.
Played in the spirit of masters football, the game ended with much puffing, panting and relief from ambulance bearers who took station around the field, oxygen and defribrillators at the ready.
Bombers Coach Doug Knight looked to be the ambos' first candidate.
The Masters titles hosted 900 players from all states of Australia,as well as support staff, coaches and supporters.
The event, held annually, was in its 30th year and is at different locations around Australia, after the official AFL season finishes.
