Heat doing their bit for Anti-Poverty Week

Poverty Bites in Cairns

Anti-Poverty Week is a chance for everyone to make a difference to help fight issues of poverty and hardship. Whether it’s getting involved with an event to raise awareness, donating non-perishable food to an Emergency Relief program that feeds the homeless, or paying for another child’s school uniform or sporting fees, we can all play our part. Anita Veivers of CASS said, “poverty can impact anyone, many working people struggle financially due to ill health, relationship breakdown and housing stress. People who are underemployed or work in seasonal and casual roles can find it difficult to manage when the unexpected happens, and can quite quickly end up in debt”.

The second ‘Budget Bites Challenge’

The Cairns Alliance of Social Services (CASS) present the second “budget bites challenge” - bringing together local identities, hospitality professionals and the community sector to showcase the delightful opportunities there are to create brilliance on a budget, and raising the awareness of poverty and its impacts in our region.

The Budget Bites Challenge is coordinated by The Cairns Alliance for Social Services, (CASS) and made possible with the help of the Anglicare food bank.

Everyone is invited to join us on Muddy’s Event Lawn, next to Muddy’s BBQ along the Cairns Esplanade on Wednesday 18th October at 10:30am and watch as the battle for the best budget cook plays out under the scrutiny of a panel of judges!

Local service providers will also be exhibiting with a focus on budget beating ideas! FREE sausage sizzle is also available.

This year’s cooks are:

Star FM's Baz & Renee
VS
Cairns Post GM Ali Davenport & Head Editor Jennifer Spilsbury

&

Northern Pride's Ty Williams Head Coach & Scott Callaghan Strength & Conditioning Coach
VS
FNQ FC Heat Captain Jamie Carroll and Coach John Cavanah.
