MFC share the points with Merrimac in an entertaining 1-1 draw

MFC shared the points with Merrimac on Saturday with an entertaining 1-1 draw at Jim Devine field. The first half of the game showed real quality from both teams as each squad cautiously tested for opposition weaknesses and gaps. There were really very few chances from either side. But then Merrimac suffered a set-back when one of their players was unexpectedly sent off. MFC were rewarded for their perseverance when top scorer Steven Unsworth put one in for the home side after a sustained and effective attack. Half time saw MFC up 1-0.

The second half saw Murwillumbah pushing up consistently looking to increase their lead but were shocked when one of their players was red carded. In the 80th minute a second MFC player was sent off for a second yellow. Merrimac took advantage of their numbers at this stage and scored four minutes later to level the score.

For the remainder of the game MFC took the attack to the opposition. Despite being down to nine men they still managed to attack and threaten the goals on numerous occasions. MFC were unlucky not to receive a penalty when a player appeared to be fouled when taking a shot from close range and soon after Unsworth was clearly brought down in the box. But no penalty. Final score was a 1-1 draw.

Earlier in the afternoon, the reserves established themselves as a team to be reckoned with with an emphatic 8-2 drubbing of Merrimac. Murwillumbah dominated all aspects of play and thoroughly deserved the sizable win.

Next week’s game will be a battle of the giants: last year’s premiers verses last year’s grand final winners. MFC take on Broadbeach at Broadbeach on Sunday: reserves at at 2pm and firsts at 4 pm Qld time.
