On Saturday 23rd August the Northern Knights played their final game of the 2014 TAC Cup Season against the Calder Cannons at Preston City Oval. The Cannons won the toss and kicked with aid of a stiff breeze in the first quarter, however it was the Knights who started quickly with the opening goal through Jayden Short. The game was a real arm wrestle from there, with the Knights holding firm against the wind before the Cannons broke away with two quick goals. Reece McKenzie put the Knights back in front soon after with a strong contested mark only to see Jayden Foster answer again for Calder and give them a five point lead. Short again kick started the Knights early in the second quarter with his second goal while McKenzie & Sam Switkowski also added majors to wrestle back the lead and allow Northern a six point buffer at the main break. In the third quarter the Cannons tall forwards began to take control of the game, booting 5 of Calder’s 6 goals to the Knights one to take a 25 point lead into the last stanza. Northern fought the game out hard in the final quarter but unfortunately the damage was too great to reel in, eventually going down by 22 points.
Kyle Langford was outstanding for the Knights at Centre Half Forward taking 10 marks amongst 26 possessions and continued to be a focal point all day. Sam Switkowski, Jayden Short & Jade Gresham all battled hard throughout the day in the midfield, while Josh Iacobaccio provided some strong rebound out of defence gathering 22 possessions across half back.
