On Sunday 3rd May the Northern Knights hosted the Geelong Falcons at Preston City Oval. In conditions that were perfect for attacking football it was the visitors who took the early ascendancy through some good stoppage work which created opportunities for their dangerous forward line. The Knights were able to create some opportunities themselves in the first quarter however for the second week in a row inaccuracy in front of goal let them down. At the quarter time break the Falcons held a 20 point lead although the both teams had had seven scoring shots. Northern began to get on top through the midfield in the second quarter with Captain Jade Gresham again leading from the front. Gresham supported by Kieran Malone & James El Moussalli were able to get the Knights first use from stoppages and allow the likes of Brayden Fiorini, Michael Mattingly and Tyrone Leonardis to use their kicking skills on the outside. With Bailey Jordan looking dangerous up forward and Malone impacting the scoreboard as well the Knights were able to level the scores by half time. Geelong then came out with renew vigour after the long break and started to wrestle back the momentum. A Four goal to two quarter from the Falcons gave them a handy 13 point lead heading into the final stanza. From their both sides had opportunities to take control although again it was Geelong who made better use of their forward entries to again outscore the Knights and go on to win by 21 points.
Jade Gresham continued his outstanding TAC Cup season with another best on ground performance for the Knights, while Michael Ercolano, Tyrone Leonardis were also among the teams best.
This Saturday the Northern Knights head to Ballarat to take on the North Ballarat Rebels. The Knights will be looking to take some learning from their two close losses of recent times and challenge the Rebels at their home ground.
