For the first time in Chargers' 20-year history the James Honey Medal vote count resulted in a tie last Friday night at Mulgrave Country Club, when star mid-fielders Alex Urban and Kade Answerth took home the club’s top honour.
The leader board after the Home and Away season revealed Urban as the frontrunner on 106 votes, closely followed by Mclean on 100, Jack Sinclair polling nicely on 75 and Answerth fourth in line for the title on 71.
With an extra voting card added for more weight on performance during finals, it was the Qualifying Final that put Answerth back into contention when he polled 20 votes – the highest possible for the round.
Answerth continued to dominate the TAC Cup Finals series where he attracted an additional 30 votes to Urban’s 15 in the Preliminary and Grand Final, launching him up the leader board to finish equal first with Urban on 121.
In their acceptance speeches, both Answerth and Urban expressed their delight in being able to share the award with one another and thanked their parents, staff and team mates for the ongoing support.
Not to be overshadowed, Toby McLean was rewarded for his stellar season finishing as Runner-Up just 6 votes behind the dual winners in addition to his 2014 Forward Line Award.
The evening was a great opportunity for the 180 players, parents and staff to come together and celebrate the club’s many achievements of the 2014 season and pay tribute to all award winners.
